Advice From an Old Geezer

By Melvin Jacker

Youth! More hours have I spent in the markets
Than you have spent with your hearts beating

Know it alls you think you are
And your wages convince you that it is so

But you have not seen it all;
You have not seen the big, black bear

He will crush you
Unawares
Pain you do not know will come
With escape not to be found

Respect me not
But heed my warning

Some time
The big, black bear shall return

Melvin consistently beats his grandchildren at the video game Madden NFL, despite the arthritis.

My Confession

They say the market is a forgiving friend
To those who know it well

My secret is deep and dark
I do not share, I do not tell

I planned and obsessed as a wise man should
When fortune came my way

With grace and cleverness I acted
Alas, said fortune did not stay

The market is no friend of mine
Like a loose lady, the feelings were not real

Under pressure you will not know
I acted harshly, but I did not steal

Up, higher, so gracefully
Swirl
Land softly

In and out
Fleeting
Avoid crash

Give and take
Swiftly
Like the graceful ballerina

Google! Do Not Desert Me!

I am your loyal investor
At IPO, with risks abound, I was present
While others waited
You, with open arms I embraced

On drops, I add to my position
No stock sits larger in my portfolio
I have pushed the frontier of concentration in your name
I am giving you all I have
And then some

Google! Do not desert me!
A share of yours I have never sold
You carry with you my hopes and dreams
Of retirement, security, and a better life

I commit now, and my word is good
I will hold you for the years to come
Please, do not forget me
Do not disappoint me

A Note to Mr. Market

Mr. Market, I love you so
But how you price I do not know

Some days valuations are nearly fair
And others they’re nowhere near

But I know that if with patience I wait
Attractive pricing is the inevitable fate

The opportunities you send me come very slow
But with time you allow me to sell high and buy low
